After using Elementary OS Luna since I started this blog, I have now switched to Ubuntu Mate 18.04 which seems to me to be more sensible distro for use on a laptop than some of the others. I first installed the 32 bit version which was a mistake, because many things like Google Chrome (which is now only compiled for 64 bit) did not work. The laptop, an Acer Aspire 5630, currently only has 1gig of RAM. I may get round to upgrading it one day, but I don’t think the extra RAM will make much difference. Anyway, the point is You are better of installing the 64 bit version of Ubuntu even if you only have a 1Gig machine.
