No sound on Raspberry Pi

Connect a stereo jack plug to stereo jack plug lead from  the sound output socket on the pi, to the sound input socket on your television. This is may be marked “PC sound input” if your TV has a VGA input socket.

The following commands work with Raspple distro, tried it.

Load the sound driver:

  • sudo modprobe snd-bcm2835

To check if the driver is loaded you can type:

  • sudo lsmod | grep 2835

Select the output device for sound (0=auto, 1=analog, 2=HDMI):

  • sudo amixer cset numid=3 1

(in my case I have a lead connected from the sound output on the Pi to the PC sound input on the TV.

Test the installation:

  • aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
  • speaker-test -t sine -f 440 -c 2 -s 1
