How do I add OS Elementary to Xubuntu?

If you like the OS elementary luna, but you would rather have a more fully-featured version of Ubuntu, then you can install Xubuntu and add the OS elementary window manager. This includes the “plank” known on other distros as the dock.

OS Elementary is currently based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, if you are using any other version, then this may or may not work.

You need to open a terminal and enter the following commands:

 sudo apt-add-repository ppa:elementary-os/stable
 sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gala dconf-tools plank switchboard switchboard-plug-pantheon-shell

What’s in this repository is here:

You can add the midori browser to most distros:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:midori/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install midori

Midori does not play YouTube videos qv.

cp /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml

Method 1: You need to use a editor,in this example "leafpad", but you could use gedit, to replace the instance of “xfwm4″ with “gala”. Logout and log back in again.

leafpad ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml
Method 2: (if the first method doesn't work) add "gala --replace" to application autostart.
To auto-start gala add it in “Application Autostart” under “Session and Startup” of XFCE Settings.
So the entry says "gala --replace"

(You can no longer change the theme through dconf so get the ppa
 for the tweak tool)

sudo apt-add-repository
ppa:versable/elementary-update && sudo apt-get update &&
 sudo apt-get install elementary-tweaks

(Copy and paste all the above on one line)
Remove Compiz from your Xubuntu right now.  Compiz makes even the simple task of clicking the maximize, minimize and close buttons into a buggy mess by making them unresponsive half the time.

Can I revert back to xfce?  Just reverse Method 1 above, and replace “gala” with “xfcwm4”

To auto-start Plank just add it in “Application Autostart” under “Session and Startup” of XFCE Settings.

How to fix window manager crash

no window buttons/decoration
no ability to move windows about or minimise
Windows Manager and Windows Tweaks are blank pages in Settings Manager etc
do this:
login as xfce session
F-2 type: xfwm4 –replace
hit “run”
log out and in again!
